After more than 40 years in the cleaning industry, I’ve learned one undeniable truth. Your first night preparation for a new client sets the tone for everything that follows. I still get a little nervous before a major startup. Frankly, I’ve experienced a few first night nightmares over my career. The questions race through your mind: Did I bid this right? Do I have enough people? Are my i’s dotted and t’s crossed? In my humble opinion, that anxiety is a sign that you care about getting it right.

The first thing I do before day-one is walk through the facility with fresh eyes. Every detail matters. Are the closets set up so cleaners can access the most-used supplies immediately? Are bottles labeled? Does the scope of work match the task and frequency schedule? Has someone thought through every detail?

This is where your account setup becomes critical. A proper setup prevents those moments of panic on day-one when you realize you’ve missed something crucial. I suggest you get permission from the client to start early so you can set up everything correctly. Yes, you might need to run back for something you forgot. Everyone knew where to start, which equipment to grab, where to be stationed, and the staggered start time for best-results. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because we’d set up the account and operation correctly from the very first moment of contact.
