Bounce Back from Money Trouble
Episode 145
Bouncing back From money trouble demands strategic help. Not only will you need to work like you just started your business, you’ll need people around you who are will to do that, too! I know how hard this is to hear. I understand that when you’re drowning in cash flow problems, the last thing you want to hear is that you need to spend more money to fix it. I’ve been on all sides of that conversation. And yes, it’s uncomfortable. You might find some common touch points where I cover the three things that nearly killed my business.
But as a cleaning company owner there’s something even worse. That’s knowing you could have saved your company and you failed, because you didn’t listen to those who could help you.
You Can’t Fix Everything
Janitorial company owners who are in the middle of Money Trouble are often trying to do everything themselves. After all, NOT hiring means they’re saving money, right?
NO!
No matter how spectacular you may be, no one you meet is a superhero. No one has all the skills needed to complete every project or grow every company. And if the cleaning company owner chooses NOT to ask for help, when suffering through financial trouble, it’s like fighting a kitchen fire without an extinguisher.
If that’s you, you’re not alone. No commercial cleaning company owner reaches out to me because there are no problems. Many of the owners I work with are stuck in the same trap of time versus money. They’re wearing all the hats. Many are facing staffing issues, supervision gaps and a mountain of administrative work. And they’re thinking, “I can’t afford help right now.” But that’s precisely when you need help most.
The Offloading Principle
When businesses experience both rapid growth or rapid trouble, the path out isn’t pulling harder on the oars yourself, it’s getting the right crew in the boat. You need to stop doing things you’re not good at and focus on what drives revenue.
Let’s be really clear about this. I know EVERY company owner has multiple tasks. Some are simply part of the role as an owner. So, I’m not referring to things that are embedded in role job. I’m referring to tasks that COULD be another role in the company, such as bookkeeping.
If you’re great at meeting clients and selling, then every hour you spend on bookkeeping, IT security, or data management is an hour not generating income. No one is paying you to do the bookkeeping! This is Simple math: if hiring someone to handle your books costs $300 a month, but you could upsell clients on carpets, flooring, landscaping, or security services in that same timeframe—that’s not an expense, that’s an investment with immediate returns.
The Hidden Cost of DIY
Let’s consider Information Technology security. I’ve seen owners think they can “figure it out themselves.” Just one breach can cost tens of thousands of dollars that you absolutely don’t have to waste. That’s not a budget item. That’s a business-killer. Paying someone to secure your systems properly? That’s insurance. That’s survival. I have an excellent contact for IT Security in RocIT!
